Work to state on site this June
Assael has secured planning permission for York’s first build-to-rent residential scheme.
The reserved matters planning application for 196 new homes was for the latest residential chapter at Hungate, a major local regeneration project.
It marks the first professionally managed and purpose-designed and -built development for rental accommodation in the City of York.
Developer Lendlease and Evans Property Group also appointed Neil Tully & Associates as landscape architect.
Work will begin on the site in June this year with completion expected in 2020.
The development comprises a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments, a communal lounge, 24-hour concierge, gym, landscaped courtyard and a rooftop terrace with views of York Minster. There will be commercial space at ground level for local businesses.
Russell Pedley, co-founder and director of Assael Architecture, said: “The proliferation of build-to-rent across the country is testimony to what it is bringing to the British housing market. By providing more than just homes, developments like Hungate create urban hubs that are enjoyed by residents and the wider public alike. It will make a significant contribution to the city.”
He added that the brick façade and detailing is a contemporary nod to York’s rich Georgian architectural history and the work of John Carr.
Richard Cook, head of residential at Lendlease Europe, said: “York has a shortage of quality rental stock. This is a proof-point that the residential market is listening to the wants and needs of not only buyers but also renters.”
