Foster & Partners, David Chipperfield, Caruso St John, Diller Scofidio & Renfro and Amanda Levete in running for Hungary competition
The organisers of the design competition to create a new base for the Hungarian Museum of Transport have revealed a shortlist for the project that contains some of the world’s most famous practices.
Foster & Partners, David Chipperfield Architects, Caruso St John Architects, Diller Scofidio & Renfro and Amanda Levete Architects feature among the list of 15 bid teams vying to transform a 7-hectare former railway works site into the new centre.
They are joined by Perkins & Will, Ralph Appelbaum Associates, Schmidt Hammer Lassen, and Bjarke Ingels Group, as well as Hungarian practices KÖZTI Zrt, CÉH Zrt – which is partnering Fosters, 3H Építésziroda, and Építész Stúdió Kft.
The museum said 11 of the shortlisted firms had been invited to enter the competition, while a further four had been added following a call for expressions of interest last month that generated 90 valid applications.
Museum general director Dávid Vitézy said the project to transform part of the Northern Maintenance Depot in Budapest would be one of Europe’s most ambitious brownfield regeneration programmes, “offering challenges in the field of architecture, urban development, heritage conservation and landscaping”.
Vitézy said the participation of world-famous international and renowned Hungarian professionals “guarantees that the jury will be able to select the winning designer out of the best talents”.
The competition jury is expected to announce a winner in February.
