Scheme will be built at Peabody’s 1,600 home scheme at Thamesmead

Adam Khan and a Norwegian practice vying to design a new £25m pavilion in Edinburgh have made the shortlist for a new library in south-east London that will pave the way for a 1,600 housing development.

The RIBA competition for the £5m library Southmere Village in Bexley will lie at the heart of the first phase of the planned 1,600 new homes to be delivered as part of the Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead housing zone (pictured).

Client, housing association Peabody, which is behind the new homes, is expected to make a decision on a winner this autumn, along with the local council.

The new library will be built on the southern side of Southmere Lake and will be close to the new Crossrail station at Abbey Wood.

The judging panel includes John Whiles, founding director of Jestico & Whiles.
