House of the Year winner David Kohn, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Invisible Studio are among 19 practices vying for one of RIBA’s 2023 South West Awards.

Piers Taylor’s Invisible Studio has three projects in the running for accolades, while FCBS and Bridport-based BEAM Architects have two entries each.

Kohn picked up the RIBA House of the Year 2022 Award in December for his Red House in rural Dorset, which also won a RIBA South West Award last year. This year he is nominated for his Cowshed project.

FCBS’ projects are the Roman Baths Clore Learning Centre in Bath and the refurbishment and repurposing of the University of Bristol’s Senate House.

Invisible Studio’s entries are House With Courtyards in Cornwall, the community-arts-centre-led East Quay mixed-use development in Somerset, and lakeside apiary Beezantium, also in Somerset.

Other shortlist entries include Stonewood Design’s Roman Villa Experience in Somerset and BEAM’s “Dazzle” treehouse.

South West jury chair Louise McMahon, who is principal at McMahon Architecture, said the wealth of shortlisted projects from across the region was a demonstration of the “extremely high and exciting” standards of architecture being produced.

“Across all typologies the skill and ingenuity on show from both architects and clients is joyously evident; from inspiring community led regeneration projects, to creative repurposing of existing buildings and intriguing, finely detailed, interventions in the landscape,” she said.

“Sustainability is central to many projects, and it is heartening to see these principles playing such a prominent role in the design process.”

The winning projects will be announced later in the spring. They will go forward for consideration for other RIBA accolades, including National Awards.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize is drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects.
