RIBA looking for architects to create a key cultural hub in borders town
The RIBA has launched a competition to find a team to design a landmark cultural attraction in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Currently the Maltings (Berwick) Trust is split across three separate venues in the centre of the Northumberland town but one, the Eastern Lane venue, is considered no longer fit for purpose.
Following a competitive procedure with negotiation on behalf of Northumberland County Council and the trust, the RIBA is inviting applications from multi-disciplinary design teams. The deadline is 2pm on 24 January 2022.
The building will be expected to be a key social, cultural and educational hub for the town as well as a key driver for the culture-led regeneration of Berwick.
Maltings (Berwick) Trust and Northumberland County Council have secured Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal funding for the project.
Ros Lamont, executive director of the trust, said: “Our firm intention is that a striking new venue will serve as a beacon for culture and creativity across our region, exceed audiences’ and artists’ expectations of an accessible 21st century public space, and provide a thriving home for a year-round programme of outstanding arts experiences.”
