Collaborators include Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, Antony Gormley and the Bartlett School of Architecture
Nicholas Grimshaw has formally launched a foundation designed to boost social inclusion within the architecture, art and design sector.
The organisation is intended to enable an existing programme of outreach work to flourish and the community of artists and designers involved to expand.
Initially focused on London, the foundation has global ambitions and has started engaging with artists and education communities in Sydney, Melbourne and New York.
Grimshaw said the basic aim of the foundation was to create a charitable organisation bringing together a community of artists, architects, and designers to “support, empower and inspire” young people
“What the Grimshaw Foundation will do is enable young people, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds, to experience the art of making and the making of art and introduce more opportunities and different career paths – opening up the world of the creative industries,” he said.
Grimshaw managing partner Kirsten Lees said there was a clear vision for the new venture.
“The foundation reflects the values of Grimshaw, where everyone’s input and opinion is valued, listened to and rewarded and people’s creativity is encouraged and celebrated,” she said.
The foundation is already running workshops and studio visits with a selection of London schools. Partners for the work include Sarah Wigglesworth Architects, the Bartlett School of Architecture, built-environment collective Scale Rule, sculptor Antony Gormley, and spoken-word poet LionHeart.
