Winners will be announced at live AYA dinner on October 14
Building Design announces the shortlists today for its 2021 Architect of the Year Awards.
The entries have been whittled down to the finalists shown below. They include Hopkins, Allies & Morrison, Cullinan Studio, McLean Quinlan and Feilden Fowles.
One of the strongest categories this year was housing, a reflection of the importance architects place on providing the best possible homes for current and future generations. Practices shortlisted for this award include Bell Phillips, Pitman Tozer, Maccreanor Lavington, Coffey Architects, Henley Halebrown, Flanagan Lawrence, Pollard Thomas Edwards and Child Graddon Lewis.
Chair of the judges Thomas Lane said: “It has been a challenging year for the profession, so it was refreshing to see some superb entries. The strength of the housing sector was reflected in the high quality of the schemes put forward and public building and refurbishment also saw some excellent entries. I am looking forward to the awards in October and celebrating in person with the best people in the industry.”
Alongside trophies for work in all the main sectors, there are also awards for the client and architectural leader of the year. These shortlists will be announced soon.
The Architect of the Year Awards, run by Building Design, are the only awards that reward architects for a consistent body of work rather than one-off projects.
The judging panel this year includes Stuart Cade of last year’s Gold Award winners, Mica, the V&A’s director of design, estate and public programme Pip Simpson, Matthew Wells, director of Techniker structural engineers and a visiting professor at Aarhus School of Architecture, and Stefanie Rhodes of past YAYA winners Gatti Routh Rhodes.
