Feilden Fowles, OMI and Carmody Groarke among six triumphant teams

Feilden Fowles’ the Fratry project at Carlisle Cathedral, OMI Architects’ Old Library at Tuebrook in Liverpool, and Carmody Groarke’s Special Exhibitions Gallery at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester have been named among the six best new buildings in the North West.

They are joined as winners of the 2022 RIBA North West Awards by Hodder & Partners’ Welcome Building at RHS Bridgewater, BDP’s refurbishment of Lancaster Castle, and Knight Architects’ Pooley New Bridge in the Lake District.

The projects were selected from 10 shortlisted schemes announced earlier this year, and beat projects by John McAslan & Partners, Allies & Morrison and AHMM to secure best-in-the-region status. (See full shortlist below)

Fielden Fowles’ the Fratry project was among the submissions that saw the practice named Building Design’s Architect of the Year and Public Building Architect of the Year in 2021.

Regional jury chair Hazel Rounding, a director at Shed KM, said “standout themes” for the winning projects were community benefit and re-use through “exceptional and trusting architect and client relationships”, which ultimately created “engaging, rigorous and delightful designs”.

“The North West jury were united in their appreciation and admiration of this year’s regional award winners,” she said.

“Each scheme contributes significantly to the region in providing sustainable, accessible places for all, important in the gradual evolution of a post-pandemic world. My congratulations to these award-winning projects, which serve as exemplar architectural solutions.”
