Scheme retained existing concrete frame and core
White Arkitekter has won planning to convert an ageing office building in Shoreditch’s warehouse district.
The scheme on Tabernacle Street will create a six-storey office building through a combination of new build and retrofit.
The proposal was to retain the concrete frame and core, while adding two extra storeys – topped by a sedum roof – and extending the building to fill the site boundary.
It will be clad in grey brick in keeping with local character.
“The challenge was to create a contemporary building that could work within the historic warehouse context, and re-use the existing concrete frame to ensure a lower carbon footprint and cost for the client,” said project architect Jay Williams, from the London office of the Scandinavian practice.
Work will start on site in 2019 with completion expected in 2020.
