Zaha Hadid Architects is to design the new temporary Guggenheim Museum in Tokyo. The 116m2 structure will be a 10-year intervention on the manmade Odaiba Island near the city.
The scheme is conceived as a catalyst for further development and a benchmark for architectural quality in the area. The external envelope will be a mix of ceramic tiles and light boxes to let in natural light during the day and let out artificial light at night. The effect will create a snakeskin-like envelope, which is animated by a large integrated media screen. Inside will be a large, single space with a mezzanine to maximise net floor area.
Hadid’s scheme was chosen from an invited list of three, including Jean Nouvel and Shigeru Ban. Nouvel is currently working on a proposal to build a Guggenheim museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
