Simon Wyatt at Cundall on the pros and cons of replacing gas boilers with heat pumps
Heat pumps are very much a hot topic at the moment, with the government’s recent heat and building’s strategy promising homeowners grants of £5,000 to switch away from gas boilers.
One problem is that the total pot of money for the boiler upgrade scheme is only £450m and only covers installations in 90,000 homes. Also lacking is a national retrofit programme to improve the insulation that many of the country’s 28 million existing homes would need to make heat pumps an effective solution.
Simon Wyatt at Cundall has been our net zero jargon buster for this podcast series and here he argues that while heat pumps may not be the perfect solution they are possibly the best option currently available to decarbonise how we heat our buildings.
